Resources supporting interoperability that were previously compiled in a Semantic Interoperability Profile (SIP) are incorporated into a standard FIP (version 5 and later) as supporting declarations, allowing streamlined and consistent management. As a result, the SIP service will be maintained for six months (until 31 July 2026) to facilitate the transition to the standard FIP service. After this period, SIP-based management will be phased out.

Please use the FIP Wizard going forward. Detailed migration instructions will be provided soon.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to us at fipadmin@gofair.foundation.

Dear Fellows and Friends!

We are delighted to announce that our next Fellows Day will be held on 23 September (afternoon) at the GFF office in Leiden. This special event is an opportunity for us to come together, share experiences, strengthen our community and celebrate achievements by awarding certificates to those who have successfully completed their courses. Hopefully, this will motivate a few more people to speed up and finish in time – 16 September is the last day to submit your completion declaration before the event. Please contact me if you have any doubts about what is needed to finish the course!

The programme will include an overview of our achievements over the last six months and our ongoing projects. You are welcome to present your own work or suggest ideas for collaboration. See here the full agenda.

Please mark your calendars and register here.

We look forward to seeing many of you there and making this Fellows Day a memorable moment together!

Warm regards,

We are migrating the production environment of the FIP Wizard to a new URL. Starting May 14, the service will be available at: https://fip.fair-wizard.com

Key Dates:

May 13: The current FIP/FSR submission service will be temporarily unavailable during the transition.

May 14: The new FIP Wizard instance goes live.

June 4: The current (old) instance will be fully decommissioned.

Between May 14 and June 4, you can still access the old FIP Wizard to manually transfer any projects that are not yet available in the new instance. However, please note that the old platform can no longer be used to create new projects or generate documents.

All your projects with published documents (like FIPS or FSRs) are being securely transferred to the new instance. You will be able to access them using your existing login credentials—no action is required on your part. However, be aware that empty and test projects will not be transferred.

If you have a project without a published document that you want to ensure gets transferred automatically to the new instance, please add its URL to this sheet at latest by Monday, May 12.

After May 14, if you cannot find your project in the new instance, you can still manually transfer your projects by following these instructions: Go to your project and publish a new document as JSON. More specifically, click Documents > New Document with Document Template Questionnaire Report and format JSON Data. Once created, click on the three dots symbol and press Download. In the new instance you create a new project using the same project template and click on import replies (right under the questionnaire at the top) and import that JSON file. All content will be imported.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to us at fipadmin@gofair.foundation.

The approval of nanopublications by GFF trained experts results in the allocation of a curation badge in the FIP Wizard, previously labelled a qualification. A revision of the terminology and icon was made to facilitate improved understanding of the process.

The curation process checks how useful a resource is at making data FAIR, and makes sure it is correctly aligned with the right FSR classes based on their definition in the FIP ontology. However, it does not check how FAIR the resource is. It checks the metadata description to see if it is complete, and suggests improvements where appropriate. If a review is successful, a nanopublication is approved (using a special template16) and a curation badge is added in the wizard. This helps to avoid duplication, incomplete descriptions, and unuseful FSRs, maintaining the integrity of the FIP approach.

Thank you for your attention!

I-ADOPT is a candidate for an OGC standard. There are concrete plans to develop a semi-automatic I-ADOPT annotation service. In preparation, we would like to test the interoperability of I-ADOPT. We are pleased to share news with you about the I-ADOPT Variable Modeling Challenge outcome:

The Challenge took place from 16 to 29 September 2024.

1st place: Anne Fouilloux and Jean Iaquinta (212.75 points)

2nd place: Andrea Tarallo, Martina Pulieri, Christina Di Muri e Jessica Titocci (206.5 points)

3rd place: Jörg Klausen, Morgan Silverman and Gao Chen (168.6 points)

Runner-up contestants:

Samantha Blakeman, Petra ten Hoopen, Saurav Kumar

These people will automatically qualify for a share in the prize pot of our second challenge (details below).

We decided to launch a second challenge that will take place

from October 14 (10:00 CEST) to 18 (22:00 CEST)

We have 1000 Euro in the prize pool for the second challenge.

There will be no single winner, but everyone contributing with at least 5 high-quality variable models will get an equal amount from the prize pot.* High-quality is defined by a variable that scores 12 points or higher.

GFF Capacity Building Programme Update

GO FAIR Foundation has updated its GFF Capacity Building Programme.

We reviewed the Capacity Building Programme and clarified the different modules for the implementer, facilitator and a trainer levels. While the content of the units has not changed, the qualifications are now more accurately aligned to the programme levels.

After completing the mandatory FAIR Awareness unit, the trainee can choose paths leading to FIP and/or M4M Implementer Qualification. As Implementer, the trainee will have gained the competencies to build and maintain domain-relevant community-specific FIPs and/or metadata resources.

The FIP Implementer Qualification consists of a single training unit (40 hours) while the M4M Implementer Qualification consists of three mandatory units including training on schema and vocabulary development as well as FAIR orchestration (60 hours). Optional units covering advanced and trending metadata topics will also be offered (for additional costs) depending on demand.

GO FAIR Foundation has updated its GFF Capacity Building Programme.

We introduced a new level for qualification for those wanting to learn the content of the CBP but not interested to become facilitators or trainers themselves. They can participate in the same training units but omit the assistance time (so in total spend 60 hours instead of 80 hours) and be qualified as Implementers.

The two modules are renamed into:

Module 1:

Unit FAIR Awareness

Unit FAIR Implementation Profile

Unit M4M introduction

Three possible qualifications:

FIP Implementer (after 60 hours training and exam)

FIP Facilitator (after 40 hours training, exam and 20 hours assistance)

3PFF Faciltitor (after 60 hours training, exam and 20 hours assistance)

Module 2, only possible after completing Module 1:

Unit M4M vocabulary

Unit M4M metadata

Unit FAIR orchestration

Two possible qualifications:

M4M Implementer (after 60 hours training and exam)

3PFF Trainer (after 60 hours training, exam and 20 hours assistance)

The I-ADOPT Variable Modeling Challenge

We are pleased to share news with you about the I-ADOPT Framework for representing FAIR observable property descriptions.

I-ADOPT is a candidate for an OGC standard. There are concrete plans to develop a semi-automatic I-ADOPT annotation service. In preparation, we would like to test the interoperability of I-ADOPT.

We therefore announce the I-ADOPT Variable Modeling Challenge, from September 16 to 22, 2024. Top scorers will be rewarded with a prize.

Are you interested in joining this challenge? Do you have sets of variables in mind which could be modelled during the challenge? Would you like to co-sponsor this event? More information on https://i-adopt.github.io/challenge.html.

All FAIR Enabling Resource have now extended metadata elements and we updated the Knowledge Model for reusing the metadata content from FAIRsharing with these extenstions. The Project Template is now integrated in the FIP Project template in Chapter VII (a), but can also be found when creating a new project in the drop down of templates (b).

FIP Wizard Important Updates

FIPs can be represented as pure RDF output: at the moment this requires some manual concatenating of two strings to a URI, but we are implementing this as additional feature in the FIP Wizard.

The manual URI generation works as follows:

you need to concatenate two strings to a uri, where the first string is to be reused as it is and the second is the last part of the FIP URI:

(first part) https://grlc.knowledgepixels.com/api-git/knowledgepixels/fairconnect-api/get_fip_rdf?fipnp=https%3A%2F%2Fw3id.org%2Fnp%2F

PLUS

(last part of FIP URI) RA92EUwxXCV8AkRwecLl09mllK1kipomZqPPAgJ8G4oN0

To get RDF:

https://grlc.knowledgepixels.com/api-git/knowledgepixels/fairconnect-api/get_fip_rdf?fipnp=https%3A%2F%2Fw3id.org%2Fnp%2FRA92EUwxXCV8AkRwecLl09mllK1kipomZqPPAgJ8G4oN0

To get JSON-LD:

Adding

&format=application/ld+json

to your string will get you a JSON-LD output

https://grlc.knowledgepixels.com/api-git/knowledgepixels/fairconnect-api/get_fip_rdf?fipnp=https%3A%2F%2Fw3id.org%2Fnp%2FRA92EUwxXCV8AkRwecLl09mllK1kipomZqPPAgJ8G4oN0&format=application/ld+json

How to get to your FIP URI:

Once you created a nanopublication for your FIP in the Wizard, you should go to submission:

Then you see the full nanopublication: you can easily copy the required part of the URI from the address bar (highlighted in orange).

https://w3id.org/np/RA92EUwxXCV8AkRwecLl09mllK1kipomZqPPAgJ8G4oN0
